What is a Primary Care Physician?

A primary care physician is a physician who provides the first contact for a person with an undiagnosed health concern as well as a continuing care of varied medical conditions. Primary care physicians are not limited by cause, organ system, or diagnose. These particular healthcare professionals are usually the first individuals contacted by a patient due to factors such as accessibility, either through search or location, ease of communication, familiarity, and issues of cost and managed care requirements. Upon visiting a primary care physician he or she will obtain a health history and perform physical examinations. The doctor will diagnose and treat, or refer a patient to a specialist. A primary physician can perform minor surgical procedures and prescribe medications to patients. There are different types of primary care physicians:

Family Medicine Doctors

These physicians provide care for individuals across their lifespan, from childhood to adulthood. This is the doctor you are likely to be familiar with. This is the doctor will often visit for any common health issue such as a common cold or even the flu.

Pediatricians

These physicians care for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents. They are your main point of healthcare when you have children.

Internists

These physicians provide care for adults of all ages, for many different medical problems. These professionals have a great general knowledge of human health and the body. They are also great professionals to get you in contact with a specialist if needed.

Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants.

Assist physicians and are often the key point of contact between the doctor and patient.

DON'T MISS APPOINTMENT WITH YOUR LOW T or HOUSTON ADHD DOCTOR

Individuals with ADHD often experience difficulties in maintaining focus, regulating impulsive actions (potentially acting without considering the consequences), or exhibiting excessive activity levels.
